Fall Cleanup and Winter Prep for Connecticut Homes

September 26, 2026 Edmundo Landscaping

Fall in Fairfield County is not a gentle season for a property. The leaf load is heavy, the first hard freeze arrives before most people are ready, and the storms that come up the coast in late autumn are what turn a marginal tree limb into a hole in a roof. Almost everything on this list is cheaper to do now than to repair in January.

Leaves first, and more than once. A single late cleanup is not enough on a wooded Wilton or New Canaan lot — leaves left matted on turf through a wet winter smother the grass and leave you reseeding in spring. Clearing in stages as they come down is less work in total than one heroic effort in December.

Then gutters, and this is the one most directly tied to everything else. A gutter packed with leaves overflows at the fascia, soaks the trim, and dumps concentrated water straight against the foundation — which is how a gutter problem becomes a rot problem and a wet basement in the same winter. Clear them after the bulk of the leaves are down, not before.

Walk your trees while you can still see the structure. Deadwood is obvious once the canopy thins, and so are limbs hanging over the roof, the driveway and the service drop. Removing a questionable limb in October is routine work. Removing it in February, after it has come down across something, is not, and neither is the repair underneath it.

Check the fence line the same way you did in spring. Posts that have loosened over the summer will be worked harder by winter wind and frost heave, and a run that is leaning now will be down by March.

Handle drainage before the ground freezes. Once it does, nothing can be trenched, regraded or extended until spring — so any downspout that still discharges at the foundation, or any low spot that pooled all summer, is now locked in for the whole winter. This is the last practical window.

Exterior washing is worth doing now too. Getting algae and mildew off siding, decks and walkways before they sit under snow for months means less regrowth and a far easier start next spring, and clean walkways are less slick when the weather turns.

Finally, use the season. Winter is when interior work makes the most sense — bathroom remodels, flooring, carpentry and painting all happen indoors, and it is the one time of year when a project does not compete with your yard for attention.
